In my 20 years working in crisis psychiatric services, I’ve found that people often connect with more interactive therapeutic techniques. Granted, past patterns often fuel the future and that’s worth exploring, but I use a combination of “now-work” activities, creative/eclectic theories and psychoeducation to help people improve insight and feel more empowered in their lives. Whether it’s through enhancing personal communication/relationships, increasing individual self-awareness, or building upon pre-existing resiliency, I help people find positive and realistic solutions to the difficulties in their lives. Anxiety, depression, grief, transitions in life, trauma/PTSD, stress management, relationship issues, substance use concerns…If anything resonates (or anything not listed), let’s work on it together.

I tend to build rapport quickly and create a safe space which enables me to approach interventions in a collaborative way. However, no one wants to be in therapy for the rest of their lives, so I like to ‘get down to business’ rather rapidly. While I do consider myself to be direct and straight-forward, I use gentle confrontation and humor as a way to ‘keep it real’. Having worked in crisis for the better part of my career, I am dedicated to do what I can to help people before it goes too far. If you want your car to keep running, periodically you have to look under the hood, change the oil and fill it with gas. If you don’t, the car starts to have problems and no one has time for that. Let’s keep your car in good working order and teach a little personal automotive care 101. Looking within can be scary, confronting issues is harder, but growth is full of rewards!

Throughout our lives, we all have times when we need help, and asking for help can be so difficult. Do you find yourself wrestling with how to make sense of what is going on in your life? Do you struggle to move on from past events or worry about the future, making you feel paralyzed, anxious, sad, depressed, irritable, or overwhelmed? If so, I would like to help you move forward. Therapy cannot change our past, but it can provide understanding, resolution, and peace of mind. Allow me to help you sort through the things that no longer make sense and arrive at a place of tranquility.

I have been working as a therapist for sixteen years, and I am passionate about supporting you on your path to well-being. I grew up on a 5th generation certified black angus cattle ranch in the San Luis Valley, which continues to thrive today. I then moved to the eastern plains of Colorado, where we are raising our own small ranch of longhorn cattle and Berkshire hogs. I fully understand and embrace the strong agricultural history in Colorado and the culture of rural communities, which can come with its own unique challenges. My holistic approach includes cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, and cognitive processing therapy. I can quickly help you dig beneath the surface.

You will feel the benefits of working with me within a couple of sessions. Gaining the ability to face complicated and, often, daunting emotions is one of the most courageous things you can do. The first step is simple, email me to schedule an appointment.

Hi! I am Lisa McCormick.  I work from a place that is attachment-based, incorporates family systems, and is trauma-responsive. I utilize research-based, neurobiologically-informed principles and parenting strategies to help children and families develop confidence, discover their strengths and grow to be the best version of themselves.

I strive to help you understand your child’s unique way of regulating and expressing themselves, the impact of your parent-child relationship, and the influence of your child’s currently developing brain. Children develop and heal in the context of their relationships so you are the most important part of your child’s life; let me help and support you through that journey. When working with adults, I like to help you understand the brilliant ways your nervous system and brain have adapted to cope and how we can work together to help you learn new ways to relate with others and manage stress or trauma.

A key piece of my counseling practice is creating a space of safety, curiosity, reflection, and non-judgement. I use a variety of theoretical orientations and perspectives based on what will help you best heal and meet your goals. During my years working with adults, children, and families, I have seen firsthand how playfulness leads to an open and genuine connection. I feel privileged that families welcome me into their world, to work collaboratively, so that healing, growth, and connection can occur.  These same elements - connection and humor - go a long way in individual therapy work as well and are foundational to my approach.

Though I enjoy working with a variety of clients I have a particular interest in working with children, teens, and families who are struggling with their relationships, want to find relief from anxiety or depression, or want to heal from attachment injuries or trauma.

My approach is holistic, integrative and eclectic. I see myself as a facilitator, helping clients access their strengths, develop new skills, identify resources and support. They move at their own pace to tackle challenges and experience healing.

Much can be learned as we recognize and respond appropriately to biofeedback – the physiological messages and signals continuously generated in our bodies. I also incorporate short term solution-focused techniques and thinking strategies to help clients reach their goals. I work with adults seeking trauma healing, facing substance use challenges/recovery, experiencing anxiety/depression, and those interested in stress reduction. Plus, I see couples seeking to improve the quality of their relationship. Finally, from 2010 to 2018, I worked on military installations with service members and their families, and I continue to serve that population.

In 1987, I graduated with a Master's degree in Health Psychology. Since 1987, I've been practicing as a certified Colorado Addictions Counselor and since 1992 as Licensed Professional Counselor. In my spare time, I take advantage of the Colorado outdoors. I hike with my dog, enjoy paddling, swimming and dancing.
