James (Jim) has worked as a clinical social worker for nearly 28 years. He graduated from Indiana University in 1994 with his Masters Degree in Social Worker. A native of Western Pennsylvania, Jim has worked and served individuals and families in rural Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wyoming and Colorado. Currently, he is employed as a clinical director for an agency on the Eastern Plains. In addition, he works part time, providing therapy to college students. In addition, he has his Masters Degree in Emergency Management from Millersville University of Pennsylvania (2009). Currently, he is enrolled in the Masters Degree in Business Administration at Pittsburg State University and expects to graduate in Summer 2022.
Jim has worked in a variety of clinical and administrative/management positions throughout his career but has always enjoyed his clinical work and continues to explore professional opportunities where he can find to make the difference in the life of others. Jim looks at his role as a social worker as being a compassionate person who has the ability to help individuals, families, and communities develop the necessary skills to enhance their well-being, being able to see the strength in others.
Jim has worked with youth, adults, and families, individuals of all ages and stages of life, in a variety of settings, providing mental health and substance use therapy, case management, and crisis services. He utilizes a cognitive behavioral (CBT) approach to therapy in addition to solution-focused brief therapy and motivational interviewing techniques. He has worked with individuals that have struggled with depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, stress, grief and loss, as well as a myriad of other challenges. Jim also utilizes positive psychology to assist his client with being able to find where the opportunities exist for change.
Jim believes in serving the community he resides in. He is a retired first responder, trained as a firefighter, EMT, and hazardous materials technician. He volunteers as a Boy Scout leader, serving as a mentor for the youth in his community, state and around the country. Jim is an active volunteer in the community he resides in on the Eastern Plains.
During the First Gulf War, he served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as a flight operations specialist in an attack helicopter battalion and during the War of Terror, he served in the Pennsylvania and Colorado Army National Guard as a behavioral health officer in a mobile medical unit.
